The IVAM, the Valencian Institute of Modern Art, it is a huge Museum devoted to Contemporary Art and a landmark of the City of Valencia. The building of new construction was inaugurated in 1989. The original design was made by the Valencian architects Emilio Giménez and Carlos Salvadores, and it was remodelled in 2000 by Emilio Giménez and Julián Esteban.
Its floor space: 18,200 m2 is split into eight galleries that house both permanent and temporary exhibitions. One of these galleries, “La Sala de la Muralla”, has its own private entrance and shows the remains of the city’s mediaeval ramparts that were built in the second half of the 14th Century.
The main target of IVAM is knowledge expansion, protection, promotion and diffusion of modern and contemporary art. The museum programme of activities includes the exhibition of art collection, the organization of temporary exhibitions and the edition of catalogues and other publications that go into the art topics of the exhibits in depth, likewise the organization of conferences, courses, workshops and concerts that are related to the works on display and other areas in contemporary art.
