In the summer, Valencia is synonymous with music festivals. With the coming of the beach months, the music scene becomes an absolute protagonist in the Valencia region. The music festival programs are incredibly extensive and diverse, attracting all types of people: from those who enjoy the melodic rhythms of reggae to people who go crazy dancing to the latest sounds of electronic music, and the music lovers who want to see their favorite international Indie band play live.
Coming to a festival in Valencia is an extraordinary experience because, in addition to hearing some of the current biggest names in music playing live, you get to hear them in an unequaled setting: on the beach, by the Mediterranean Sea.
The most well-known of the festivals in Valencia is the FIB, which attracts thousands of music festival enthusiasts to the coastal town of Benicassim each summer. But these enthusiasts don’t only come to Valencia for the FIB, and here we offer you some options of different festivals to go to while you’re visiting our area: Low-Cost Festival, Arena Sound, Privée Summer Festival, or Rototom Sunsplash.
Rototom Sunsplash:
If you love reggae, this is an event you will not want to miss. This is the third consecutive year that Rototom Sunsplash is celebrated in the Valencian site of Benicassim from the 16th – to the 22nd of August. For 19 years, Rototom Sunsplash has brought to their stages some of the world-renowned biggest names in reggae, making it the biggest annual compilation of the Rasta movement in Europe, musicians, and fans alike.
At the last festival, there were more than 200-thousand people gathered at Rototom Sunsplash, which had more than 370 different performers on the bill. Those numbers speak for themselves, and it’s no exaggeration to call Rototom Sunsplash the biggest reggae festival in Europe.
Low-Cost Festival:
This is considered one of the most important and prestigious showcases of independent music in Spain. This is the fourth consecutive year that the festival will be held in the city of Benidorm; it will take place from the 27th – to the 29th of July. The key to success for this festival: put together huge concerts at a good price (60 Euros per ticket for all three days).
The line-up for the Low-Cost Festival 2012
It is headlined by international bands like Suede, Placebo, and Kasabian, as well as up-and-coming bands like Citizens!, Le Corps Mince de Françoise, and Kakkmaddafakka. Vetusta Moral will be the main musical representation of our national bands.
Arenal Sound Festival: Hostel Arenal Sound
This festival is celebrated in the Castellón city of Burriana, on the Arenal beach, from the 2nd – to 5th of August. For the third year, Arenal Sound has lined up key names from the independent pop scene, both foreign and national. Kaiser Chiefs headlines the 2012 Arenal Sound Festival, and this will be the only time that the British Indie band will perform in Spain this year. The Wombats, Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Fighters, and Monarchy are some of the other international performers that will play the stage at Arenal Sound.
Of the national groups, the list is long and impressive: Love of Lesbian, Sr. Chinarro, Sidonie, Los Campesinos!, Supersubmarina, El Columpio Asesino, Maga, Niños Mutantes, Hola a Todo el Mundo… Again, Arenal Sound Festival is an unbeatable show to gauge the quality and state of the independent music made in Spain.
Privée Summer Festival:
This is the most important gathering for electronic music which comes to Valencia during the summer months. On the 15th of July, for 14 uninterrupted hours, the aquatic park Aqua Natura in Benidorm hosts the best DJs from both the national and international scenes of Techno-House music.
Steve Lawler, Audiofly, and Uto Karem are the main headliners for Privée Summer 2012, and they are expecting to put on another great show following previous years and to gather tens of thousands of fans in an unending electronica party.
