How to go from Valencia to Barcelona
If you are in Valencia and you want to visit our most international spanish city, loved by Woody Allen and lived by Picasso or Dalí, is very easy to go to this famous city from Valencia. Just get these tips:
Go by Train
In Spain, trains are the most comfortable way to travel, especially if you have a lot of luggage. To get from Valencia to Barcelona by train, one of the best places to look is directly on www.renfe.com (click “Welcome” towards the top of the page to change the site into English).
There are two main train stations in Valencia: Estación del Norte and Estación Joaquin Sorolla. The two stations are not very far apart, but to make it even easier on travellers, there is a free shuttle provided that connects the two stations; the shuttles come approximately every fifteen minutes.
Trains to Barcelona can leave fromValencia as early as 5:00am and as late as 8:30pm. The longest your train ride will be is about 5 hours and 30 minutes, but they can be as short as 3 hours.
Make sure you look at what you are buying!! Prices for the train can be very different depending on what type of ticket you buy. “Turista” is an economy seat; “Preferente” is a first-class ticket. Some trains are actually train-hotels, and you can buy different types of beds on the train for an increased price. This is a nice choice for long journeys, but if you don’t need to sleep on your quick trip to Barcelona, then a normal seat should still be very comfortable. Prices will also change based on the time of day and the type of train, so look around before buying to make sure you are making the right choice.
Home Youth Hostel is a great hostel to stay if your next destination is Barcelona (or if you are coming from there). We are located about 15 to 20 minutes from Estación del Norte on foot, very near the city’s centre. After you enjoy your stay with us in Valencia, you can make the short trek back to the train station and off to your next destination!!
Go by Bus
Travelling by bus will generally be the cheapest way to travel. If you are looking to buy a bus ticket from Valencia to Barcelona, go to www.alsa.es (click the British flag if you would like to see the site in English). There is one main bus station in Valencia located on Avenida de Menéndez Pidal.
Prices do not vary too much from one bus to the other, but make sure you know what you are buying!! Prices can change if the bus you are choosing offers something other than the normal service. Bus schedules can vary greatly; buses from Valencia to Barcelona can leave as early as 12:15am and as late as 8:00pm. Bus rides tend to be longer than train rides, so the trips can take from 4 to 6 hours.
Home Backpackers Hostel is another great hostel to stay if your next destination is Barcelona (or if you are coming from there). We are located about 15 to 20 minutes from Valencia’s bus station on foot, also near the city’s centre. After seeing Valencia and enjoying your stay with us, you can take the nice walk back to the bus station to go on your next adventure.
